If the Klan Ran Texas

I've tried to explain a few different times how Saudi Wahhabism has had a negative effect on the rest of the world but have never explained it quite as good as Bernard Lewis.
"Imagine if the Ku Klux Klan or Aryan Nation obtained total control of Texas and had at its disposal all the oil revenues, and used this money to establish a network of well-endowed schools and colleges all over Christendom peddling their particular brand of Christianity. This was what the Saudis have done with Wahhabism. The oil money has enabled them to spread this fanatical, destructive form of Islam all over the Muslim world and among Muslims in the West. Without oil and the creation of the Saudi Kingdom, Wahhabism would have remained a lunatic fringe."
Put in those terms it is much easier for North Americans to realize the full extent of the hate and fear that Wahhabism has caused among its followers. Just imagine the hatred that would have been caused if the Klan had the same opportunities that the radical clerics of Wahhabism have had. Then you would have some idea of the volume of poison that had been spread by the Saudi regime, and its not pretty.

Another interesting way to use the KKK metaphor is to say the so-called insurgents in Iraq are really like the KKK who wanted to get slavery back after the Civil War. In other words the Baathist party members were like the KKK slave owners and ruled over 80% of the rest of population who worked for them, now the KKK wants to return to the good old days in Iraq. If all that is true it means there will KKK-like insurgents around for a few more years yet. Of coarse the CBC expert, Gwynne Dyer, is rooting for the KKK.
