Money in Politics

After watching a news show today and listening to how much Republicans are the party of 'rich' and 'corporate' America (spoken by a Democrat of course) I had to go and find the numbers as to who is actually contributing to these political parties.

First we'll look at the American data between the Republican and Democratic parties provided by Opensecrets.org. Notice that at the lower level of contributions Republicans have a slight edge over Democrats. As you increase the amount of the contribution though Democrats begin to have an edge over Republicans going as high as 92% to 8% for contributions over $1 million. So who again is the party of the rich and the party of the poor. Democrats and liberals in general never stop reminding us of how the Republicans are the party of the rich. Why then don't the facts back up that assertion?

Now in regards to the Canadian data we find a similar story. Liberals in Canada never miss an opportunity to remind us that the Liberal Party sticks up for the little guy while the Canadian Alliance only cares about corporations. Just like the American case though you'll see that this is total foolishness.

According to the Library of Parliament we have the Liberal Party receiving $3.1 million from individuals and $5.1 million from corporations. On the other hand we have the Canadian Alliance who received $5.9 million from individuals and $1.1 million from corporations.

So who is in the pockets of Canada's corporations?

And taken as an average with total contributions divided by the number of contributors we have for the Liberal Pary $13,252,644 / 17891 = $741 per contribution while for the Canadian Alliance we have $10,456,087 / 95651 people = $109 per contribution.

So who represents wealthy Canadians?

How liberals in both Canada and the U.S. can keep up the myth that conservatives care only about the wealthy is beyond my comprehension.
