Another on the U.N.

Here is an interesting article on some of the U.N.s scenanagins in regards to the Internet:
The United States, backed by the European Union, Japan and Canada, has turned back a bid by developing nations to place the Internet under the control of the United Nations or its member governments.

But governments, the private sector and others will be asked to establish a mechanism under U.N. auspices to study the governance of the Internet and make recommendations by 2005.
Is it not possible for these fools to keep their hands off of anything? It's quite amusing to watch the U.N. as it assumes it is the most qualified organization to handle any and all problems/technologies/issues that arise in this world. What the bloody hell gave the U.N. the idea that it was the most qualified body to 'govern' the Internet?

I can picture it now. The U.N. would have to create a 10,000,000 (rough estimate, inflated a bit but you get the point) man team to 'police' the Internet and ensure that no one was saying any unkind or unpleasant words. Unless of course you're ranting about the Jews or Americans then of course it'ld be OK. This 'right' (or lack thereof) would be enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Internet Rights, which like all declarations made by the U.N. would apply to everyone except murderers, despots, tyrants, and criminals.

As well guess who'll get the honour of paying for these 10,000,000 censors consultants? You and I of course. Nothing the U.N. ever does would ever pay for itself. What would be the point without sucking the lifeblood out Western Democracies and handing the ill gotten goods over to some thug from some ill-governed part of Africa. Who cares if he uses the cash to purchase weapons to suppress his own people. It's our good intent that counts. Right?

I agree with Jonah Goldberg on this one and we should create a League of Democracies. At least then we wouldn't have to get lectured by the likes of Saudi Arabia about our lack of -> add favorite victims group here <- rights.

Finally from the article:

Major differences remain between developed countries and African countries led by Senegal over the creation of a "global digital solidarity fund." Talks on the issue will continue today and tomorrow.
Are there any programs sponsored by the U.N. that do not involve transferring large sums of money from one group of countries to another? Why not actually trying to solve some of the worlds problems instead of hoping that they magically go away?

Anyways, it seems to me that the U.N. has developed a highly detailed plan to assist developing countries that can be broken down into these basic steps:

1) give large sums of money to the rulers/elite of a poor country
2) ensure that at least 25% of that money is actually used to feed, cloth, or generally improve the lives of the people
3) protect the tyrant/thug/murderer/despot from criticism as he makes threats against portions of the population
4) when he goes on his killing spree and destroys all of the things built by the 'global digital solidarity fund' make statements blaming the U.S. for either a) intervening or b) not intervening.
5) or blame the Jews

The U.N. seriously blows and its usefulness is well past due.

Have a good night.
